Non-compete agreements will soon be a thing of the past as the Federal Trade Commission recently voted to ban them nationwide. They currently affect 1 in 5 Americans, somewhat dictating how freely one can switch roles. And beyond allowing Americans the chance to work where they want, when they want, it could potentially boost wages by $488 billion in the next 10 years and promote fair competition.

Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan has said noncompete agreements stop workers from switching jobs, even when they could earn more money or have better working conditions. “We heard from employees who, because of noncompetes, were stuck in abusive workplaces,” she said. These accounts, she said, “pointed to the basic reality of how robbing people of their economic liberty also robs them of all sorts of other freedoms.”

This is a step in the right direction!
Men aren’t the only ones with limited knowledge of #menopause—women report a lack of education as well, which is wildly concerning considering it’s something we’ll all experience at some point.

Studies show that women under 40 report a lack of education and their healthcare professionals lack adequate training on menopause. This obviously doesn’t properly prepare women for such a transformative phase of their life. And where there’s a lack of education, adequate support and healthcare also suffer.

Improving women’s healthcare and moving it forward to a place that actually improves our wellbeing starts and depends on education.
Despite the incontestable excellence of female athletes across the world, there is still a massive disparity in the media coverage they receive. Did you know that 85% of total television coverage focuses on men’s sports? And that’s only in the last 5 years as women’s sports coverage has tripled. Women’s leagues aren’t the focus of mainstream media, nor are they featured at local bars – Portland bar owner, Jenny Nguyen, is working to change that. 👏

The Sports Bra, a bar dedicated to women’s sports, was created to provide a social environment that fully devotes itself to women’s athletics. It was the first U.S. bar to do so but it certainly won’t be the last! Nguyen’s goal has always been to create “a sports bar where women’s sports are on, and the bathroom is always clean, and the menu has gluten-free options.”

Bottom line: in a world filled with sports bars, we are in desperate need of more sports bras! Now, with investment from Alexis Ohanian’s 776 Foundation, The Sports Bra plans to franchise, expoanding to other U.S. cities. “You look at all these sports now and there’s undeniable excellence coming from women and I’m just looking for all the ways we can reinforce and build and do it in a way that makes sense with the community,” said @alexisohanian. “Who I am, right now, at this age, is what’s important. What is my best opportunity at 18, at 25, at 35, at 60?”

Age is just a number. What matters is this very moment right now. What are you going to do with it?

Did you know April is Jazz Appreciation Month? Viola Smith showed the world that women can play music just as well as men. As one of the first professional female drummers, she appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, in films and on Broadway, and was part of an all-women orchestra made up of her and all seven of her sisters. She and her sister Mildred later started their own band, “The Coquettes,” another all-female orchestra.

Her 1942 article for @downbeat_mag titled “Give Girl Musicians a Break!” shared, “In these times of national emergency, many of the star instrumentalists of the big name bands are being drafted. Instead of replacing them with what may be mediocre talent, why not let some of the great girl musicians of the country take their place?‘’ 👏
“We are still vibrant human beings… go out and find what you want.”

Live your life in color, at every age. You can be all the things she mentioned AND whatever else you decide.

So *that’s* why offices are so cold… And sure, while this seems like a small detail, it does support the fact that so many things in our daily lives were designed by men, for men. Small changes lead to BIG transformation, even if it starts with tapping the ⬆️ button on the thermostat.

Breaking records continues to be Caitlin Clark’s *thing*. The latest news for the basketball star is a historic $28 million brand deal with Nike, complete with a signature shoe—and she hasn’t even played one WNBA game yet. This follows plenty of commentary around Clark’s first-year base salary of $76,535, that’s already predictably paling in comparison to the massive endorsement deals coming her way.
Salary transparency is not just the right thing to do – it’s the law (in some places). As 2023, California, Rhode Island, and Washington joined the growing list of locations across the U.S. where salary transparency is mandated. This means, roughly 1 in 4 U.S. workers live in a place where employers are required to share pay ranges by law, according to a Payscale analysis.

But 25% isn’t enough. As the old adage goes, you don’t know until you know. Salary is no longer a hush-hush ordeal, it’s a pathway to achieving #equality. 💵
That’s what she said 💥 Here are a few wise words we’re living by lately.

New research shines a spotlight on the crucial role of women doctors. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that women are less likely to return to the hospital or die when treated by women doctors.

Why? Records suggest that female doctors tend to operate more slowly and may achieve better results by taking their time, communicate more clearly and aren’t dismissive of women’s pain.

Studies show that women’s pain is taken far less seriously than men’s, often dismissed entirely. This leads to delayed treatment or misdiagnosis. Medical bias effects women and people of color. This is especially true for Black women, who have some of the highest maternal mortality rates. ⁣We need to raise awareness about this critical issue and always be sure to advocate for yourself & others: Speak up if you feel unheard or dismissed at the doctor’s office!
